The Dacian Limites

The fort Livezile was a Roman auxiliary troops camp in the municipality of Livezile (Jaad) , Bistriţa-Năsăud County in the Romanian region of Transylvania .

location

The location of the Livezile fort is in the pastures on the northern edge of the community and is largely not built over, but the southern fort area was destroyed by the establishment of the Protestant cemetery. Topographically, the former military camp is located on a ridge in the area where the Racilor brook flows into the Bistrița . In ancient times it was part of the Limes Porolissensis in the province of Dacia superior (later Dacia Porolissensis ) and in its position it had the task of monitoring the northern Rodna pass leading into the Barbaricum . The traces of the former Roman presence can still be seen in the area today.

Archaeological evidence

During the archaeological investigations in 1960/1961 under the direction of Dumitru Protase , only one phase of the fort construction could be determined. This consisted of a wood and earth fort, which was built in the Trajan period, but had probably already been abandoned under his successor Hadrian .

The wood-earth warehouse had a rectangular floor plan of 120 by 166 meters, which corresponds to an area of almost two hectares. It was aligned with its sides in the four cardinal directions, with the long sides facing east and west, so that it can be assumed that it was oriented with its pretorial front (front) to the north, towards the enemy. In front of the wood-earth wall was a simple trench, the one on the south side of the fort with a width of 5.25 m and an average depth of 1.80 m, on the other sides with a width of 4.00 m a depth of 1.25 m could be measured. Nothing is known about the former occupation of the fort.

Limes course

Between the Livezile fort and the Orheiu Bistriței fort, in today's settlement around two kilometers as the crow flies north of the municipality of Budacu de Jos , four kilometers south-southeast of Bistrița, around six kilometers west of the Orheiu Bistriței fort and ten kilometers south-southwest of the fort Livezile was in one In the forest area, a watchtower with a square floor plan was found ( RO055 ), which had not yet been disturbed before its investigation. The site was well preserved and the wall and ditch system surrounding the tower is still clearly visible in the area.

The finds from the excavations in the area of the Livezile Fort are kept in the Muzeul Judecean Bistrița-Năsăud, ( District Museum Bistrița-Năsăud) in Bistrița .
