Dunasead Castle

Dunasead Castle ( Irish : Caisleán Dhun na Sead , dt .: "jewel Fort", sometimes Baltimore Castle called) is a solid house from the 17th century in the city of Baltimore in the west of Ireland's County Cork .

history

The current castle is not the first at this location. In 1215 an Anglo-Norman settler, FitzStephens , had a tower house with an enclosure built there, which in turn replaced an older fortress, probably a Ráth . In 1305 the castle was attacked and burned down by one of the powerful Irish Gaelic families, the MacCarthys ( Mac Cárthaigh ). Another Irish Gaelic family, the O'Driscolls (Irish Ó hEidirsceoil ), much smaller but still powerful in the region, subsequently took possession of Dunasead Castle and had the castle rebuilt.

The O'Driscolls were under constant pressure from attacks by Anglo-Norman settlers and rival Irish Gaelic clans on their territory and in their commercial interests, resulting in the castle being attacked and destroyed many times over the centuries. A particularly long-running feud broke out in 1368 between the O'Driscolls and the Waterford merchants after an attack by the O'Driscolls on the Waterford fleet. This feud lasted intermittently for nearly two centuries, ending with the sacking of Dunasead Castle and other O'Driscoll castles by a new fleet from Waterford in 1537.

The castle was rebuilt, but after the O'Driscolls helped Hugh O'Neill in the Battle of Kinsale , they had to cede the castle to the English army. Some of the O'Driscolls were pardoned and Dunasead Castle returned to Florence O'Driscoll , who subsequently leased it along with much of his land due to financial problems. The current castle was probably built in the 1620s and surrendered to Oliver Cromwell's troops in the 1640s .

The castle later fell into disrepair, but was renovated between 1997 and 2005 and is now used as a private residence.

description

Dunasead Castle is built on a chain of sandstone hills in the middle of Baltimore, high above the harbor. It consists of a two-story building with a rectangular floor plan and an additional attic, which is surrounded by an enclosure or curtain wall. The main building is set in the south-west wall of the enclosure and its footprint is approximately 6 meters × 18 meters. The defensive facilities of this building are rather meager compared to previous tower houses in the region: the windows on the ground floor are narrow loopholes and there is a guard tower on the southwest corner. Only the fence could offer some protection against attackers.
