Duncan Brinsmead (born January 26, 1960 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian musician and software developer . Brinsmead became famous for his patents simulating natural objects and landscapes in 3D computer graphics .

Life

Duncan Brinsmead is the son of Alan and Aveleigh Brinsmead. He grew up in Edmonton in the Canadian province of Alberta . From 1977 to 1980 he studied music and French horn at the University of Toronto . He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and in 1984 from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

In the early 1980s, Duncan Brinsmead accidentally got access to a Silicon Graphics graphics computer and began programming routines for it as a self-taught person. The result was animated fractals and the abstract short film "Fractal Fantasy" shown at the SIGGRAPH conference .

With this expertise he was hired by the Toronto animation software company Alias ​​Research (later "Alias ​​Inc.", "Alias ​​Wavefront", now Autodesk ). Brinsmead worked on the particle system and user interface in the computer graphics packages Power Animator , Terra Forma, and Maya. As a senior scientist in the development department for Maya, he invented Maya Paint Effects , Maya Hair and Maya Toon . Maya nHair , nCloth (for simulating fabrics and clothing) and the Nucleus dynamics solver followed later .

Duncan Brinsmead lives in Toronto and is married to Anne-Marie. The couple's son, Alan Brinsmead, is a musician and lives in Spain.

Duncan Brinsmead's patents include the Paint Effects built into the animation software Maya , with which spatial structures of meadows, flowers and trees can be interactively painted and animated on the computer, also under the influence of natural phenomena such as wind and gravity. Another patent represented a technical breakthrough in the simulation of hair in animated computer graphics ( nHair ). In 2008, together with his colleagues Jos Stam , Julia Pakalns and Martin Werner, he received a technical Oscar for the Fluid Effects system in Maya, which uses formulas based on fluid mechanics to generate steam and gases in real time, but also coagulating and mixing structures in 3D to let.
