Duncan McCargo (* 1963, Great Britain ) is a professor of Southeast Asian Policy at the University of Leeds . He is considered a Thailand expert.

Life

McCargo studied Southeast Asian, Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and has taught at Queen's University Belfast and Kobe Gakuin University in Japan. He lived in Thailand and Singapore for a few years ; he also taught in Cambodia and Japan.

In addition to his main focus, the political situation in Thailand, McCargo also published on political aspects of Indonesia and Vietnam. McCargo was critical of the Thaksinization of Thailand , but also the overthrow of Thaksin Shinawatra . In his view, the escalation of the conflict between Malay Muslims and the Thai central government in southern Thailand was a reaction to Thaksin's violent and arbitrary policies. Ultimately, this was one of the reasons for his fall, supported by the Privy Council. McCargo has written for the Daily Telegraph , Financial Times , Guardian , New York Times and Time Magazine .

Awards

His book Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand (2008) won the 2009 Bernard Schwartz Book Prize of the Asia Society .
