The dark-mantled ant shrike ( Thamnophilus palliatus ), Syn. Lanius palliatus , belongs to the genus Thamnophilus within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil and Peru .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland and mountain forest , preferably between 1000 and 2200 m altitude.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin pallium 'coat' .  

The species used to be conspecific with the fine- striped ant shrike ( Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus ).

The bird is about 16 to 17 cm tall and weighs between 26 and 28 g. The iris is yellow, the strong beak is dark on the top and light gray on the underside and has a small hook at the tip. The male has a black hood, the forehead is spotted white, the upper side, wings and tail are red-brown, everything else including the rump is striped in black and white. The flanks have a light red-brown color. The female is distinguished by a strong red-brown hood, wider white transverse bands on the underside and more red-brown on the flanks. In young birds there is even more red-brown coloration.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • T. p. palliatus ( Lichtenstein , 1823), nominate form - Northeastern Brazil
  • T. p. vestitus ( Lesson , 1831) - east coast of Brazil
  • T. p. puncticeps P. L. Sclater , 1890 - Southeast Peru, North Bolivia, and West Brazil
  • T. p. similis J. T. Zimmer , 1933 - Peru

voice

The song is described as a moderately long, faster-increasing tone sequence of similar, higher-pitched tones that end in a longer, accentuated, falling sound.

Way of life

The food consists of insects , which are usually sought individually or as a pair in the thicket and dense hanging vegetation above 6 m above the ground.

The breeding season in Brazil is between October and January. The clutch consists of two creamy to reddish-white eggs with irregular purple, red-brown or dark brown spots.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
