The Dunkelsteinerwald , spelling also Dunkelsteiner Wald , is a mountain range south of the Wachau in Mostviertel , Lower Austria .

Location and landscape

The Dunkelsteinerwald accompanies the Danube in the section Melk to Mautern . Its north-eastern end is to the right of the Danube south of Krems . From there it stretches in a slight curve for almost 20 km to the south-southwest.

The massif is a "branch" of the Waldviertel , the mountainous part of Lower Austria north of the Danube. From a geological point of view, it belongs to the granite and gneiss plateau , the part of the Bohemian Massif in Austria , from which it is separated above ground by a breakthrough valley of the Danube, the Wachau. The Dunkelsteinerwald is predominantly made up of the highly metamorphic rock granulite . Only in the south of the ridge do other metamorphic rocks occur. a. various gneisses as well as mica slate and amphibolite . The eponymous mountain in the Dunkelsteinerwald, the Dunkelstein ( 625  m above sea level ), owes its name to the dark tint of amphibolite.

The landscape reaches heights of up to 700  m above sea level. A. and is characterized by forestry and agriculture. The climate is much rougher than in the neighboring Wachau. Trade and industry are only available to a limited extent. Many residents of the Dunkelsteinerwald therefore have to commute to work in the nearby district towns of Krems and Melk or in the state capital St. Pölten .

Initiatives

The Hafnerbach energy group was founded in December 2008 . The energy group has set itself the goal of achieving networked energy self- sufficiency in the Hafnerbach community . In this model there are still material and energy flows in and out of the community, but the sum of the sustainably generated energy must exceed the total consumption.

In the spring of 2009, a wind farm in the Hafnerbach municipality in the area around the Dunkelstein was discussed. The personal committee for the protection of the Dunkelsteinerwald from the neighboring municipality of Neidling has spoken out against the planned wind power plants on several occasions for ecological, regional image and landscape considerations.
