Duraduct

The Duraduct is a planned pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Mühlental in the city of Schaffhausen in Switzerland . One day the bridge will connect the Breite and Geissberg quarters with one another at a level. A lift from the valley floor up to the bridge will facilitate access from the city center to the higher quarters. The portmanteau Duraduct consists of Durach , the current flowing through the mills and Bach Viaduct together.

history

The first idea to connect the two up-and-coming quarters of Geissberg-Hochstrasse and Hohlenbaum-Breite , separated by the Mühlental, came from the engineer Adolf Eggenschwyler in 1934. After the Second World War , this bridge was no longer a priority and was forgotten. The interest group Pro Velo Schaffhausen relaunched the idea of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Mühlental in 2004 under the name Duraduct.

The project was included in the federal government's first agglomeration program in 2007, which equates to a cost contribution from the federal government. With the Agglomeration Traffic Program (PAV), the federal government financially participates in traffic projects in cities and agglomerations . According to the federal government, the Duraduct is a “lighthouse project for non-motorized traffic ”.

In 2009 and 2010, the city of Schaffhausen worked with an engineering office on a feasibility study. This was resumed and updated in 2017.

In November 2019, the Schaffhausen city council submitted a loan application for 680,000 francs to the city parliament. A public, two-stage planning competition is to be launched and the final construction project to be worked out by the winning team.

Project

The project envisages a 280 meter long and almost 44 meter high bridge over the Mühlental. The project studies came to the conclusion that the “middle” variant was the best of the three available variants. In a slight S, it leads directly past the new high-rise buildings for the “steel foundry” construction project. By 2021, 442 new apartments will be built on the site of the former Georg Fischer AG steel foundry . The western end of the bridge (459 m above sea level) is at Gartenstrasse (Quartier Breite), the eastern end (454 m above sea level) at Weinsteig (Quartier Geissberg). The bridge, which is expected to be 3 meters wide, will rest on three pillars, with a lift in the middle pillar leading to the Mühlental. This will allow easy access from the old town to the two quarters and allow the new housing estate to enter both quarters.

The city council estimates the rough costs for the Duraduct at 9.5 million francs in 2019. The cost accuracy is plus / minus 30 percent. Thanks to the inclusion in the agglomeration program, the federal government is contributing 1.7 million francs . The city and canton of Schaffhausen each pay half of the remaining 7.8 million francs .

Use

The quarters of the city of Schaffhausen are located on hills in a semicircle around the old town on the Rhine . When changing quarters, you usually have to drive on a street around the old town. This road network has partially reached its capacity limit and is difficult to expand for reasons of space. The road network around Schaffhausen is to be relieved of car traffic through the level connection of the Breite district with the sports and leisure facilities and Geissberg with the connection to the Stahlgiesserei housing estate through the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge. In addition, the Duraduct creates an attractive tangential connection for bicycle traffic of regional importance in the form of a new cycle route Beringen - Enge - Neuhausen am Rheinfall - Rosenbergstrasse - Breite - Duraduct - Geissbergstrasse - Kantonsspital - Herblingen . The route leads largely away from busy roads and has significantly less height differences than the route via the city center.

future

On May 19, 2020, the Great City Council approved a planning loan of 680,000 francs against the votes of SVP and FDP with 19 to 15 votes. The landowner's consent is still pending.

According to the plan of the city council of Schaffhausen, the necessary referendum should take place in November 2022. The opening of the building is planned for the end of 2024.
