Durendal in the rock of Rocamadour

Durendal (German Durandart (e), Italian Durindana ) is the name of the supposedly miraculous sword of Roland in the old French Roland song . According to the legend, it was forged by Wieland (old French Guallant).

Legend

Charlemagne is given a sword by an angel, which the bravest follower should carry in the fight against the heathen. Karl presented this sword to his paladin Roland. In the Roland song, the hilt of the sword is said to contain a tooth of the apostle Peter , the blood of St. Basil and a hair of St. Dionysius, as well as a piece of the Virgin Mary's robe . To save it from the attacking Saracens , Roland tried to destroy the sword after he had previously made the breach of Roland in the Pyrenees . After the Roland's song, faced with the expected defeat against the Moors , he threw himself into his sword or lay down on it after trying to destroy it on a rock. According to another legend, he threw away the weapon that got stuck in the rock of Rocamadour . It can be viewed there.
