The Brèche de Roland ( Spanish Brecha de Rolando , Aragonese Breca de Roldán ; German also Rolandsbresche ) is a gap at an altitude of 2807 m in the Pyrenees on the border of the Hautes-Pyrénées department , France, and the Aragonese province of Huesca , Spain. The gap is 40 m wide and is overlooked by 100 m on both sides by steep rock walls.
The ridge is located in the main ridge of the Pyrenees, where the Spanish Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park on the southern side of the border and the French Pyrenees National Park meet. The remnants of the small glacier Glacier de la Brèche lie to the north of the cut and to the north-east of it are the steep cliffs of the Cirque de Gavarnie .
Based on Roland's legend about Charlemagne's campaign to Spain in 778, it is said that the breach was carved out of the mountain by Count Roland with his sword Durendal when he tried to destroy the sword after his defeat at the Battle of Roncesvalles .
The saddle can be reached after about an hour's ascent from the nearby Refuge des Sarradets ou de la Brèche de Roland ( 2587 m ); Refugio de Góriz (around 2200 m ) is on the southeast side . The transition from Refugio de Góriz to Refuge des Sarradets over the Brèche de Roland takes around 4 hours.
