The Durlston Castle was on the hill Durlston Head above Durlston Bay within the Durlston Country Park built. Durlston Country Park is south of Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck , in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England .

prehistory

There are numerous historic quarries in the Swanage area , most of which stretch along the cliffs to the south. Portland stone , Purbeck stone and Purbeck marble were quarried in these quarries .

John Mowlem (1788–1868) and his nephew George Burt (1816–1894), both from Swanage, were successful stone merchants and building contractors in London. They wanted to develop Swanage into a prosperous place.

location

In 1862 George Burt bought the hills around Durlston Head . In this area there were some quarries where his company quarried with the limestone . He wanted to develop this area into a tourist attraction, so in 1887 he built a small castle on the hill, a Folly . Durlston Castle was designed by architects G. R. Crickmay of Weymouth and built entirely from local stone by W. M. Hardy in 1886–1887. The "castle" was built as a restaurant for visitors to its property. A sundial and two stone tablets are attached to one side wall of the castle. The boards are labeled, show various statistics and the course of the tides. The sundial is designed as a world time clock.

Burt also had the Great Globe made , a 40-tonne globe that is three meters in diameter. The world map is engraved in the globe based on the findings of 1880.

The walking paths around the castle and the Great Globe are surrounded by cast iron bollards brought from London. All around the property there are other stone slabs with quotes from Shakespeare and the Bible , as well as maps of the English Channel and the United Kingdom, and other facts about the biological evolution of the earth.

Durlston Castle changed hands continuously after World War II until Dorset County Council bought it in 1973. From the middle of April 2010 until the end of 2011 the castle was completely restored. The cost was £ 5.5 million. The castle now has a restaurant and houses the Jurassic Coast Visitor Center which is open to the public.

From Orcombe Point , in the west, to the Isle of Purbeck, in the east, stretches a stretch of coastline that was the first natural landscape in England to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Durlston Country Park with Durlston Castle is part of the Jurassic Coast , it is one of the natural wonders of the world and the coast is known for its fossils .
