The ESEA is currently leading regionally divided, partly multi-class leagues in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 . At the end of November 2015, the ESEA was bought up by the Electronic Sports League.

history

Founded in 2003, ESEA has since made game servers available to its users on which they can compete against other ESEA users to improve their skills. The ESEA distributed the first prize money in 2009 following the introduction of fixed seasons. While there was only one league in Counter-Strike 1.6 in the first season, a league in Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 was also introduced in the second season . In the second season, the ESEA established the Invite Division as the highest division in Counter-Strike 1.6, which was expanded to the other two disciplines in Season 3 . Since Season 3, ESEA has also been holding an offline event in Dallas at the end of each season . For some seasons, players were also offered an open league in StarCraft II and League of Legends , but these have been completely removed from the league system since 2013. With the switch to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , for whose leagues prize money has been awarded since 2012, ESEA discontinued the Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source leagues in 2013. With the new game CS: GO, ESEA was also able to establish itself in Europe. European teams have also been taking part in the LAN finals in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive since 2013. Since 2014 (season 16), the four best teams from the highest ESEA leagues in Europe and North America have been taking part in the LAN finals in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The ESEA made a big step in 2015 in cooperation with the Electronic Sports League with the establishment of the ESL ESEA Pro League , for whose offline finals with 250,000 US dollars, as much prize money is distributed as for those sponsored by the Valve Corporation Major tournaments . In the meantime, the ESEA also offers its own leagues with prize money in South America , Asia , South Africa and Australia .

ESEA client

The ESEA is still known for its anti-cheat tool - the ESEA client - which is a prerequisite for successfully playing in the ESEA leagues. With the help of the program, the player Simon “smn” Beck was convicted of ESEA in November 2014 and shortly afterwards banned from Valve's anti-cheat program . In November 2013, the ESEA reached an agreement with the state of New Jersey on a fine of up to one million US dollars . According to the ESEA, an employee had secretly generated Bitcoin on the computers of users of the ESEA client . Since an update in May 2015, the ESEA has been able to access its users' computers administratively using the ESEA Client and monitor, save and upload information via monitor and mouse movements.
