The Dream of the Rhine is a comedy film and a music film by director Herbert Selpin , who also worked on the script , from 1933. In the lead role , FW Schröder-Schrom embodies the financially independent German-American Jupp Steinweg, who after many years uses the opportunity to play his To pay a visit home in the Bonn area.

The wealthy German-American Jupp Steinberg happened to meet a German vocal quartet in the States. Although he suffers from a heart disease, he takes this opportunity to pay a visit to his German homeland. He and his daughter Mary set off on a trip to Germany. During the trip he hires a now worn out teacher for his daughter so that she doesn't have to catch up too much in school after the trip. He also hires an unemployed chauffeur. What he does not know at this point is that the teacher and the chauffeur otherwise earn their living with sometimes illegal means. As a result, he himself gets into a mess .

Film music

Among other things with the song “Sehnsucht nach dem Rhein” by the Rhenish composer Willi Ostermann , whose melody with a new text (1936) became the unofficial Cologne city anthem under the title “ Heimweh nach Köln ”.

The film was released in German cinemas on October 18, 1933 . In the USA this happened over two years later, on December 8, 1935 (there under the title The Dream of the Rhine ). It was released for Austrian film distribution under the title What would the world be without love .

Review by the Nazi regime

The Nazi regime checked the film on September 6, 1933 on possibly detrimental to the regime content. No complaints were found, which was rather unusual for films produced during this period.
