The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) ( French Préposé fédéral à la protection des données et à la transparence , Italian Incaricato federale della protezione dei dati e della trasparenza ) is the data protection and freedom of information commissioner for Switzerland with its official seat in Bern . As the Federal Data Protection Officer (EDPS), he was exclusively responsible for data protection until July 2006 .

Its legal status and tasks are regulated in the fifth section of the Federal Act on Data Protection and in the fourth section of the Federal Act on the Principle of Public Information in Administration (Public Information Act ) .

Its tasks therefore include, among other things, the supervision of federal bodies and private individuals, the support and advice of the federal bodies and the cantons , statements on federal legislative proposals, advising private persons and informing the public.

The data protection and public relations officer provides advice on both legal ( data protection law ) and technical issues ( data backup ).

Within the scope of the Public Information Act, the FDPIC fulfills various functions: information and advice for private individuals who require access to official documents, advice to federal offices and departments in the implementation of the Public Information Act , management of the arbitration procedure in the event of disagreements, submission of a written recommendation for the attention of those involved. The FDPIC also reviews the implementation, effectiveness and costs of the Public Information Act and reports regularly to the Federal Council .

The FDPIC is a member of the International Conference of Commissioners for Data Protection and the Protection of Privacy .

Hanspeter Thür held the office of the FDPIC from 2001 to 2015. Adrian Lobsiger took up the position of FDPIC on June 1, 2016 .
