Hanspeter Thür (born May 31, 1949 in Staad SG ) is a Swiss lawyer and politician.

job

Thür studied law at the University of Basel and completed his studies with a licentiate in both rights (lic. Iur.). After a court internship, he worked as a lawyer with offices in Aarau and Zurich . In 2000 he began an extra-occupational postgraduate course in business, administrative and environmental mediation at the University of Applied Sciences in Baden.

In 2001, Thür was elected Federal Data Protection Commissioner by the Federal Council. He succeeded Odilo Guntern , who resigned on June 30, 2001. Since July 1, 2006, the official title has been "Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner".

Thür is a vehement defender of banking secrecy, which he sees not as the secret of the banks, but of the bank customers. In return, he criticizes the banks that have turned banking secrecy into tax evasion secrets and turned it into a business model. In an interview with the Swiss Month magazine in May 2012, Thür said: “In the end, the data protection officer has to defend banking secrecy against the banks!”

Thür warns of a global surveillance state, which is made possible by the fact that private-sector, data-trading companies and intelligence services such as the NSA join forces: "The purpose of alleged security justifies the means of consistent suspicion."

Thür hosted the International Conference of Commissioners for Data Protection and the Protection of Privacy from September 14 to 16, 2005 in Montreux .

At the end of November 2015, Thür retired from office.
