During the Second World War , over 400 cooperative residential buildings were destroyed or damaged.

The years 1945 to 1989

In autumn 1945, cooperative property was placed under forced administration in the entire Soviet Zone . In 1964, five new housing cooperatives founded between 1954 and 1957 merged to form AWG Stadt Cottbus e. G. together. In 1976 the AWG Stadt Cottbus merged with four other cooperatives, which were based on building associations founded before the Second World War . In 1979 the AWG received its 10,000. New apartment in the Cottbus district of Sachsendorf . In 1981 Gewoba also joined . The AWG Stadt Cottbus with now around 18,000 apartments has become the second largest landlord in Cottbus.

On March 24, 1990 the AWG Stadt Cottbus was renamed the non-profit housing cooperative "Stadt Cottbus" eG .

Since 1990

With the beginning of the Economic and Monetary Union in June 1990, the Federal German Cooperative Act also came into force for the East German cooperatives .

While apartments were still in short supply at the beginning of the 1990s, from the end of the 1990s the demographic situation led to a rapidly increasing vacancy rate. The cooperative took over 5,000 apartments off the market between 2002 and 2010 and contributed the majority of the urban redevelopment in Cottbus. In addition, since 1990 it has invested over 400 million euros in improving its housing stock. New buildings such as the Schlosskirchpassage (1997), the Zimmerstrasse / Puschkinpromenade district (1998), the residential park on the Spree in Burg (1998) and two timber-framed apartment buildings in Finsterwalder Strasse (1998) were built. In 2001, with the conversion of an eleven-storey high - rise building on Theodor-Storm-Straße into five urban villas, a model project was implemented as part of the urban redevelopment .

2011

On May 24, 2011, the GWG "Stadt Cottbus eG" was renamed eG Wohnen 1902 .
