development

The EMB was founded in 1991 as Erdgas Mark Brandenburg through the change of name to Märkische Gasversorgung Potsdam. The shareholders Gaz de France , Vereinigte Elektrizitätswerke Westfalen and Westfälische Ferngas-AG had acquired the shares in the Treuhandanstalt .

By 1994, the town gas used up until then was replaced by the cheaper natural gas. In the following years, the currently 4,470 km long gas network was completely modernized and expanded. Numerous localities were also newly connected to the natural gas network, in 2004 and 2005 alone this affected over 90 localities in the region.

In January 2006, EMB and Gasag founded the group subsidiary NBB Netzgesellschaft Berlin-Brandenburg. As an independent network operator, NBB is responsible, among other things, for the EMB's natural gas pipeline network. Since then, EMB has focused on trading in energy and energy-related services.

With the participation of EMB, the largest bio-natural gas plant in Brandenburg was built in Rathenow- Heidefeld at the time of commissioning . Biogas obtained from renewable raw materials has been processed into bio natural gas here since July 2009 and fed into the public natural gas network. Since January 1, 2008, the company has also been offering the supply of electricity in several network areas that is 100 percent generated from hydropower.

In 2019, VNG AG sold its 25.1% stake in EMB to Berliner Gasag, which increased its stake to over 98%.
