The EMD F40C is a diesel-electric locomotive that was built by EMD between March and May 1974 for suburban traffic. It is equipped with a 16-cylinder EMD 645 engine that can develop 3200 hp (2390 kW). The 15 built locomotives have the same frame as the EMD SD40-2 and are therefore also 20.98 m long. They were publicly raised to improve commuter traffic on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ( Milwaukee Road ) lines west and north of Chicago to Elgin and Fox Lake in Illinois . They later became part of the METRA locomotive fleet . In 1973 and 1974, Amtrak purchased locomotives of the EMD SDP40F class that were identical in construction , but were equipped with steam generators.
All locomotives were decommissioned in 2003 and 2004 with the commissioning of the new MP36PH series . 13 locomotives were sold to leasing companies, while the two vehicles 611 and 614 were held in the Western Avenue depot . In spring 2009, vehicles 611 and 614 were reactivated for regular use on the former suburban lines of Milwaukee Road to compensate for the lack of vehicles during the renovation work on the oldest vehicles in the EMD F40PH series . The F40C, together with the EMD SD70MAC of the Alaska Railroad, are among the last six-axle diesel locomotives that are still regularly used in passenger train traffic in North America.
The vehicles were ordered from EMD in two lots 73612 (13 vehicles) and 73689 (2 vehicles). At Metra they were given baptismal names.
