The EMD SD40-2 is a series of six-axle diesel-electric locomotives from the US locomotive manufacturer General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD).

A total of 3,949 machines of this series were manufactured. This makes the SD40-2 one of the most popular diesel locomotives in the world. The British Rail Class 59 was derived from this series . Official end of production in 1986, but 1988 and 1989 another 25 derived from the SD40-2 machines were CP Rail with wide (safety) cab and closed vehicle - building delivered as SD40-2F.

development

The SD40-2 is a further development of the EMD SD40 series . For the first time, a modular structure of the components prevailed at EMD. EMD offered the Dash 2 models (English for "dash 2") in three performance classes, analogous to their predecessor. In addition to the EMD SD40-2 (3000 hp, 2,200 kW), a weaker ( EMD SD38-2 , 2000 hp, 1,490 kW) and a more powerful ( EMD SD45-2 , 3600 hp, 2,650 kW) sister series were developed.

construction

As with the EMD SD38 , EMD SD40 and EMD SD45 locomotive families , all three series are built on an identical frame . This meant that the three series were of the same length. Compared to the previous series, however, this has been extended by 0.91 meters . In contrast, the long structure only grew by 0.41 meters, which resulted in a large overhang of the locomotive frame. Newly developed bogies have been installed in all Dash 2 series , which - according to the manufacturer - deliver higher tractive power compared to their predecessors. The SD38-2 and SD40-2 use the same diesel engine type EMD 16-645E3 . The type designation EMD 645 means that the engine had a displacement per cylinder of 645 cubic inches. The machines of the SD40-2 and SD38-2 series had 16-cylinder engines . The engine of the SD 45, however, has 20 cylinders. Because of the longer crankshaft in the 20-cylinder engine of the SD45 or SD45-2, mechanical problems kept coming up, so that numerous locomotives of these types were converted to the weaker but more reliable 16-cylinder engine during later modifications.

In contrast to the SD38-2, the motor of the SD40-2 is charged in order to achieve higher performance.

The most striking distinguishing feature of the SD40-2 compared to the SD 38-2 is the number of roof fans at the end of the vehicle. While the SD38-2 only needs two fans, the SD40-2 has three fans.
