The EMD SD38-2 is a series of 6-axle diesel-electric locomotives from the US locomotive manufacturer General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD).
A total of 81 or 83 machines of this series were manufactured. The information in the literature is not entirely uniform. The SD38 largely corresponds to the sister series EMD SD40-2 .
development
The SD38-2 is a further development of the EMD SD38 series . For the first time, a modular structure of the components prevailed at EMD. EMD offered the series, soon to be called Dash 2 (English for dash 2), analogous to its predecessor in three performance classes. In addition to the EMD SD38-2 (1,500 kW), a medium-power ( EMD SD40-2 , 3000 hp, 2,250 kW) and a powerful ( EMD SD45-2 , 3600 hp, 2,700 kW) sister series were developed.
construction
As with the EMD SD38 , EMD SD40 and EMD SD45 diesel locomotive families , all three series are built on an identical frame . This meant that the three series were of the same length. Compared to the previous series, however, the frame has been extended by 0.91 meters . In contrast, the long structure only grew by 0.41 meters, which resulted in a large overhang of the locomotive frame. In all Dash 2 series, newly developed bogies have been installed which, according to the manufacturer, provide higher tractive power compared to their predecessors. The SD 38-2 and SD 40-2 use the same diesel engine type EMD 16-645E3 . The type designation EMD 645 means that the engine had a displacement per cylinder of 645 cubic inches. The machines of the SD 40-2 and SD38-2 series had 16-cylinder engines . The engine of the SD 45, however, has 20 cylinders. In contrast to the SD 40-2, the motor of the SD 38-2 is not charged in order to achieve higher performance. The most striking difference between the SD 38-2 and the SD 40-2 is the number of roof ventilators at the end of the vehicle . While the SD38 only needs 2 fans, the SD40 has three fans.
First time customer
The following list contains all railway companies that put the SD 38-2 into service for the first time. The owners of the machines sometimes changed due to company mergers .
