The EU Spirits Regulation defines the production, composition and labeling of highly alcoholic beverages for the common internal market. It also protects the designation of many spirits with (or without) geographical indications for individual member countries.

The ordinance defines the following 46 categories, each of which differs in at least one property such as permitted and required manufacturing processes, ingredients, flavors and colors, alcohol or sugar content:

  5. Brandy / brandy
  6. Pomace (brand) (e.g. grappa)
  7. Brandy from fruit pomace
  8. Currant Brandy ( Raisin Brandy )
  9. Fruit brandy
  10. Brandy made from apple or pear wine
  11. Honey brandy
  12. Yeast brandy (brandy from lees)
  13. Beer brandy ( Eau de vie de bière )
  14. Jerusalem artichoke (Jerusalem artichoke brandy)
  15. vodka
  16. Fruit brandy
  17. ghost
  18. gentian
  19. Juniper spirits
  20. gin
  21. Distilled gin
  22. London gin
  23. Caraway (spirit with caraway)
