The EVI Energieversorgung Hildesheim GmbH & Co. KG is a municipal power company in the city of Hildesheim . The company was founded in 1998 as a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Hildesheim AG. In 2020 the company will have around 270 employees. The owners are Stadtwerke Hildesheim AG (74.8%) and Thüga AG (25.2%). EVI is the basic supplier of electricity and gas in the city of Hildesheim.

history

On January 1, 1890, the city's magistrate merged the two supply areas of gas and water under the name “Municipal Gas and Water Works”. Until 1932, the municipal utilities (gas, water, electricity and trams) were combined in a joint department. However, the energy sector and the tram were managed separately. In 1933 both administrations were merged under the name "Städtische Werke". In 1972, the city council of Hildesheim decided to reorganize the own company Stadtwerke Hildesheim into the own company "Stadtwerke Hildesheim AG". 26 years later, the group spun off the energy division into its own company. Before that, the administration and workshop building on Römerring was put into operation in 1985.

EVI Energieversorgung Hildesheim GmbH & Co. KG was founded on December 23, 1998. The organizational and informational unbundling was also carried out at EVI and thus the EVI network and EVI sales areas were separated from each other.

Gas supply

On December 17, 1861, the first gasworks in Hildesheim went into operation to illuminate the streets of the city with 380 installed gas lamps. A gas tank with a capacity of 1250 m³ made this supply possible. The demand for gas rose steadily during this time, which made the expansion of the gas works and the construction of several storage facilities necessary.

From 1932 Hildesheim also obtained coke oven gas from the " Ilseder Hütte " and from 1942 further quantities from Ferngas Salzgitter GmbH. After the Second World War , the gas was also increasingly used for heating. As a result, sales increased steadily. From January to October 1970 the conversion from coke oven gas to the environmentally friendly energy carrier natural gas was carried out in the supply area. In November 1976 the newly built natural gas transfer station north was put into operation.

In order to optimize the supply, the construction of a pipe system began in 1997 and was completed in 2002 with a geometric pipe volume of 14,500 m³ natural gas . In 1996 Hildesheim's first natural gas filling station was opened on the company premises. In December 2005 a natural gas filling station for private vehicles was built near the motorway (Berlin roundabout) and the company's own filling station was only used for corporate purposes.

Water supply

After a few deep drilling investigations, a temporary pumping station was built on the local Schlump and on November 7, 1887 it went into operation. Previously there was insufficient water supply from isolated wells. After the construction of the pumping station, around 26,000 people in the city had 235 m³ of water at their disposal, which was transported from the pumping station to various taps in the city via a pipe.

In 1894 the first waterworks was built on the site of the Ortsschlump. Due to increasing water consumption in households and also in the commercial and industrial enterprises of the city, the construction of a waterworks began in 1909 in the municipality of Poppenburg, a few kilometers from the gates of Hildesheim. Two elevated tanks ensured that the citizens were constantly supplied with the precious liquid. In 1931/1932 the local Schlump and Poppenburg waterworks had reached the limits of their capacity with a total output of around 2.0 million m³ annually. For this reason, a "drinking water supply contract" was concluded with the " Harzwasserwerke " (HWW) in 1933 . These began deliveries in 1934 after the construction of a "Sösefernleitung".

In World War II, about 40% of water supply systems were destroyed. After immense construction work, the drinking water pipe network had reached a length of 124 km in 1953, 1007 hydrants were installed, 5779 house connections and 6146 meters were installed. In 1952 and 1971 the amount of water used by the Harz waterworks was increased. The additional delivery has now also been made from the newly built Granetalsperre . Stadtwerke Hildesheim, now a stock corporation, built more elevated tanks and secured the drinking water supply for the rapidly growing urban area.

Power supply

In 1895 the magistrate received several offers from foreign companies who wanted to set up a power station in Hildesheim. The AEG was awarded the contract. The power station desired by the Hildesheim industry was built on a municipal property on Hermann-Roemer- und Speicherstrasse and officially went online on January 1, 1905 with a machine output of 500 kW.

Little by little, gas lighting was replaced by electric street lamps. Initially 140 customers were supplied with electricity, but due to strong demand, a second steam turbine was installed in the same year and another one was commissioned. From August 7, 1905, the city tram was also part of the customer base. With the installation of a 1000 kW steam turbine in 1912, the power plant's ability to deliver increased to 2750 kW. Two years later, a quantum leap in electricity supply to Hildesheim could be achieved with the three-phase supply from the large power station in Hanover. In 1921 the fifteen-year lease with AEG expired and the plant came under municipal administration as per the contract.

In 1931, the company's own electricity generation was shut down and a new supply contract was signed with PreussenElektra . The war also suffered a severe setback for the city of Hildesheim's power supply. Continuous development work, the construction of three new substations, numerous transformer stations and the constant expansion of the power grid and its maintenance ensure that the city is supplied with electricity to this day.

Heat supply

EVI Energieversorgung Hildesheim has been supplying district heating to the Hildesheim area since 2011 . For this purpose, a seven-kilometer long district heating network and a wood-burning power station were built. All buildings that are close to the grid route can be supplied with district heating. These include residents of Speicherstrasse, Bischof-Jansen-Strasse, Kardinal-Bertram-Strasse, Kurzer Hagen, Bohlweg, Hückedahl, Kreuzstrasse, Domhof and Almsstrasse. The power station's customers include the Hildesheim Cathedral and the Arneken Gallery . The district heating network reached a length of a good 11 kilometers by 2017 and will be further expanded in the direction of the new Ostend district on the site of the former Mackensen barracks.

Before that, block-type thermal power stations had already been built to supply heat, including in Gebauerstrasse and in Hildesheim's St. Bernward Hospital.
