Eamonn Magee (born July 13, 1971 in Belfast ) is a former British professional boxer and former WBU welterweight champion.

In his home country he also caused several scandals outside the boxing ring.

Amateur career

Eamonn Magee was Irish light welterweight champion in 1992 and 1993 and also won the silver medal in this weight class at the 5th Junior World Championships in 1989 in Puerto Rico . He defeated Iwan Iwanow from Bulgaria, José Sánchez from Cuba and Victor Peréz from Puerto Rico, before he was only defeated in the final Enrico Berger from the GDR. At the 7th World Championships in Finland in 1993 , he lost in the second preliminary round against Oktay Urkal .

In 1992 the amateur boxing federation refused to allow him to take part in the Summer Olympics in Barcelona for disciplinary reasons . The reason for this was not least his involvement in a mass brawl in front of a restaurant in 1989 with legal consequences, but also a renewed argument from 1992, in which he was shot by members of the IRA . In 1994 he was again involved in a mass brawl in a bar and was given a suspended sentence.

Professional career

In November 1995 he became a professional light welterweight boxer and won his first seven fights, five of which by knockout. The next fight took place in the United States, where he suffered his first defeat against the eventual North America champion Teddy Reid (6-1) when he lost on points. This was his only fight in the United States. After four consecutive knockout victories, including against Allan Hall (17-2), he boxed on November 30, 1998 against Paul Burke for the vacant Commonwealth title, but lost by losing points.

But already in his next fight on May 22, 1999, he defeated Alan Temple by knockout in round 3 and became Irish champion. On September 13, 1999 he succeeded in a rematch against Paul Burke, this now prematurely defeat in the sixth round and thus secure his Commonwealth title. He then successfully defended the title five times against strong opponents such as Joseph Miyumo (18-1), Shea Neary (23-1) and Jonathan Thaxton (21-6). He also won four non-title fights, including against Pawel Melnikow (9-0).

On June 1, 2002, he received the first opportunity for the world title of the WBU, which is highly regarded in Great Britain . He fought against Ricky Hatton , unbeaten in 28 professional fights , who is considered the most successful light welterweight boxer in British history. Magee scored a knockdown after just forty seconds of the first round, which was the first in Hatton's career. Hatton was then counted and had to go back to the ground after another 15 seconds, as Magee threw him off balance with a turn. Then the fight went over the full number of laps, but Hatton carried away a unanimous point victory. On June 14, 2003, Magee's attempt to become European champion failed by losing points to Oktay Urkal (32-1). On September 6, 2003, he finally won the WBU welterweight title, by unanimously winning points against Jimmy Vincent.

In February 2004, he was again involved in a brawl in Belfast in which he was attacked with a baseball bat and suffered a broken leg and kneecap. Although doctors predicted the end of his boxing career, he got back into the ring 13 months later and was again WBU welterweight champion on March 18, 2005 with a knockout win against Allan Vester (25-5). On May 20, 2006, however, he lost his title by losing points to Mehrdud Takaloo (24-5) and then only fought two more fights before ending his boxing career in May 2007.

After boxing

After his active career, he worked as a boxing trainer at Breen's Gym in Belfast. In January 2010, he was again involved in a brawl and was sentenced to six months, including three months unconditional, for assault. In March, however, the conviction was overturned as it was not clear whether he had sparked the argument or was just defending himself. In May 2010 he was banned from the city of Belfast by a court, banned alcohol and now lives at a court-appointed address in England. The reason for this were death threats he made against his ex-wife and a former girlfriend. In June 2010, he was arrested again for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, and violations of his probation conditions were proven. In 2011, he was convicted of a 2008 theft.

In May 2015 his 22-year-old son Eamonn Magee junior, who has also been a professional boxer since June 2014, was stabbed to death in West Belfast.
