Marquess of Abergavenny , in the County of Monmouth , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The name of the title refers to Abergavenny Castle in Wales .

The Marquesses' family home is Eridge Park in Rotherfield near Crowborough in East Sussex .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was given on January 14, 1876 for William Nevill, 5th Earl of Abergavenny . Together with the Marquessate he was awarded the subordinate title Earl of Lewes , in the County of Sussex .

From his father in 1868 he had inherited the titles Earl of Abergavenny , in the County of Monmouth, and Viscount Nevill , of Birling in the County of Kent , created for his great-grandfather in the Peerage of Great Britain on May 17, 1784 and henceforth subordinate .
