John Nevill, 5th Marquess of Abergavenny
John Henry Guy Nevill, 5th Marquess of Abergavenny , KG , OBE ( November 8, 1914 - February 23, 2000 ) was a British peer , officer and politician .
life and career
He was the older son of Guy Larnach-Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny and Isabel Nellie Larnach. He attended Eton College and Trinity College at Cambridge University .
In 1936 he became an officer in the Life Guards and served in World War II . 1945 was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire and in 1946 was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel . Nevill was Honorary Colonel of the traditional Kent Yeomanry from 1949 to 1961 and from 1961 to 1962 of the Kent and County of London Yeomanry .
He was a member of East Sussex County Council from 1947 to 1954 and County Alderman for East Sussex from 1954 to 1962 . He was Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex from 1955 and 1970 to 1974 and first Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex from 1974 to 1989 .
In addition to his military and political career, he was also director of Massey Ferguson from 1955 to 1985, director of Lloyds Bank from 1962 to 1985; Chairman ( Chairman ) of Lloyds Bank South-East Regional Board from 1962 to 1985 and director of Whitbread investment .
Membership in the House of Lords
When his father died in 1954, Nevill inherited his title of nobility as Marquess of Abergavenny , as well as the then associated seat in the House of Lords . There he sat as a crossbencher . On 11 June 1992 he was admitted introduced . This is his only entry in the Hansard .
He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 . He had not run for election for any of the remaining seats.
Honors and other offices
In 1974 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion and was Chancellor of this order from 1977 to 1994 . In 1976 he was also named Knight of the Order of Saint John .
In 1986 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Sussex .
family
Nevill married Patricia Harrison (1915-2005) on January 4, 1938 . They had five children together, four of whom were daughters and one son.
He died in 2000 at the age of 85. Since the son died before him, his nephew inherited his title as Christopher Nevill, 6th Marquess of Abergavenny (* 1955).
