The Roman Catholic parish church of Kennelbach is located in the municipality of Kennelbach in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to St. Joseph and belongs to the dean's office in Bregenz in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building is a listed building .

Location description

The church stands on the church hill in the east of the village of Kennelbach and is surrounded by a walled cemetery.

history

The church was originally a branch church of Bregenz. The Dominican convent founded on the Hirschberg in 1422 was relocated to Kennelbach in 1463. Their monastery church was also used for the regular church services in Kennelbach. In 1785 the church was made a curate . In 1796 the monastery and church burned down, the church was restored two years later. In 1863 the church was elevated to a parish church. The current church was built by Fidel Kröner from 1890 and consecrated in 1891 . The interior was restored in 1954 and 1955, and the exterior was restored in 1974.

The church has a neo-Gothic nave with a low recessed choir and north tower. The nave is divided by wall pilasters and rectangular niches. On the north-east side there are four, and on the south-west side there are five pointed arched windows over a cornice . There is a side entrance on both sides. A two-story sacristy adjoins the choir on the east side . The nave and choir are under two separate pitched roofs . In the main facade to the west is the richly profiled portal with triangular gable and tracery, which is flanked by pinnacles and finials . There is tracery in the ogival tympanum field. There is a rose window above the portal, and above it a three-tiered pointed arch window.

The church tower is three-story and structured by cornices. The sound windows are ogival and coupled. The tower is crowned with a gabled spire.

Above the nave is a flat wooden ceiling that rests on consoles . The pointed triumphal arch separates the nave from the retracted, two-bay choir with a 3/8 end. Above the choir there is a vaulted cap that rests on pilasters. In between is a yoke-separating belt arch . The gallery with wooden parapets rests on two wooden supports. There are curved stairways on both sides. The glass paintings on the windows come from the Tyrolean glass painting company . The pictures in the choir from 1906 show the “Flight to Egypt” on the left and “Annunciation and the Miracle of Pentecost” on the right. On the left side of the nave, the rear window from 1894 shows the “ Immaculata ”. The following pictures on the left are from the years 1907/08. They show the “Baptism of Christ”, “Mary with Jesus” and the “Dream of Joseph”. The glass pictures on the right are also from the years 1907/08 and show the " Salvator ", a scene from the Mount of Olives, "Christ appears to women" and Christ and Mary. The back picture from 1894 shows the " Good Shepherd ".

Furnishing

The high altar is a cafeteria with a tabernacle . Above is a crucifix by Alfred Crepaz . On the left side altar is a statue of the Virgin Mary with child from 1955. On the right side altar there is a figure of St. Joseph, also from 1955. On the pulpit are reliefs of the theological virtues : Faith, Hope and Love from 1955. The Stations of the Cross are reliefs by August Valentin from 1906.

The organ was built by Anton Behmann in 1897 .

On the outside of the funeral hall are terracotta reliefs of St. George and the " Prodigal Son " by Emmerich Kerle from 1974.
