Thomas Wentworth, 1st Baron Wentworth

Baron Wentworth is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award

The title was created on December 2, 1529 for Sir Thomas Wentworth . This was an important courtier in the Tudor period . He rose to Lord Chamberlain of the Household .

As with many old baronies of the Peerage of England, creation was not done by appointing a person to be a peer ( Letters Patent ), but by asking the person to take a seat in the House of Lords ( Writ of Summons ). A special feature of these baronies by writ is that they can also be inherited in the female line if there are no sons. However, between several sisters - unlike with brothers - the principle of primogeniture does not apply . Since the title can neither be shared nor held jointly, the title is suspended if there are no sons but several daughters ( if into abeyance ). Anyone with co-authorization can then apply to the Krone to end the suspension. The title was suspended from 1815 to 1856.

Other titles

The first baron was a descendant of Philip le Despencer, 2nd Baron le Despencer and claimed the title Baron le Despencer created in 1397 , which has been suspended since his death in 1424. This title has been claimed by the respective title holder since then.

The fourth baron was raised to Earl of Cleveland on February 5, 1626 . The title expired on his death in 1667.

On May 5, 1762, the ninth Baron was raised to Viscount Wentworth . This title expired with the death of his son in 1815.

The thirteenth baron inherited the title of Earl of Lovelace from his father . On his death in 1906, the barony fell to his daughter, while the earliest dignity fell to his half-brother.

The sixteenth baroness married Neville Bulwer-Lytton , a son of the well-known diplomat and writer Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton , who then also received his title. Their son inherited both titles. Since 1957 the barony has been run as a subordinate title of the respective Earl of Lytton .
