Neville Stephen Bulwer-Lytton, 3rd Earl of Lytton (born February 6, 1879 in Calcutta , British India , † February 9, 1951 in Paris , France ) was a British officer , sportsman and painter .
biography
Neville Bulwer-Lytton was the youngest of seven children of the diplomat Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton and his wife Edith Villiers, Countess of Lytton in British India . He first attended Eton College and later the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris .
On February 2, 1899, he married Judith Blunt in Cairo . The couple lived at Crabbet Park Arabian Stud in Sussex , United Kingdom , where they had three children:
- Noel Anthony Scawen (1900–1985)
- Anne (later known as Lady Anne Lytton) (1901–1979)
- Winifred (later known as Lady Winifrid Tryon) (1904–1985)
During the First World War , Neville Lytton served as a British Army officer on the Western Front. He fought in both the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Amiens and was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the French government . His wife later became estranged from him and the couple presumably divorced in 1923. On May 1, 1924, Neville remarried in France. With his second wife Rosa Alexandra Fortel from St Rambert-en-Burgey , he had another daughter in 1921. In 1947 he succeeded his brother Victor Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl of Lytton as 3rd Earl of Lytton. After his own death in 1951, he was succeeded by his son Noel Lytton, 4th Earl of Lytton .
Athletic career
From 1896 to 1898 he was active in the Hertfordshire County Cricket Club as a cricketer. In 1908 he took at the Olympic Games in London at Jeu de Paume tournament , where he won the bronze medal. In 1911, 1912 and 1913 he was an international amateur tennis champion.
Artistic activity
In the period from 1900 to 1940 Lytton exhibited his art in the Walker Art Gallery , the New English Art Club , the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Academy of Arts . Neville Lytton also became a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in Paris and exhibited his art there. His frescoes depicting his wartime experiences are on display in the Victory Hall in Balcombe .
