Baron Sheffield
Baron Sheffield is a hereditary British title of nobility created four times; once (1547) in the Peerage of England , twice (1781 and 1783) in the Peerage of Ireland and once (1802) in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards and other titles
In the first bestowal on February 16, 1547 in the Peerage of England, the title Baron Sheffield , of Butterwick in the County of Lincoln , was created for Edmund Sheffield . The 3rd Baron was made Earl of Mulgrave in 1626 , the 3rd Earl in 1694 Marquess of Normanby and 1703 Duke of Buckingham and Normanby . All named titles expired with the death of the 2nd Duke in 1735.
The other three awards were all to the same person, namely John Baker-Holroyd . On January 9, 1781, he was awarded the title Baron Sheffield , of Dunnamore in the County of Meath , in the Peerage of Ireland . Two years later, he was also in the Peerage of Ireland, on September 20, 1783, the title of Baron Sheffield , of Roscommon in the County of Roscommon , bestowed. This award was made with the special addition that in the absence of male descendants, the title could also be inherited by his female descendants from his first marriage. On July 29, 1802, he was awarded the fourth title of Baron Sheffield , of Sheffield in the County of York , bestowed on him. This title belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the other titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . On January 22, 1816 he was also raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Earl of Sheffield and Viscount Pevensey . All these titles expired on the death of his grandson, the 3rd Earl, in 1909, with the exception of the Barony of 1783, which, due to the special addition, fell to Edward Stanley, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley . He already held the title of 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 3rd Baron Eddisbury . His descendants still hold the third award today.
