Thomas Henry Oliver Stanley, 8th Baron Stanley of Alderley (born December 28, 1927 , † November 19, 2013 in Stanton St. John , Oxfordshire ) was a British peer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life

Thomas Henry Oliver Stanley, 8th Baron Stanley of Alderley, was born the third son of Lieutenant-Colonel Oliver Hugh Stanley (1879-1952) and his wife Lady Alice Kathleen Violet Thynne (1891-1977).

On the death of his cousin Lyulph Stanley, 7th Baron Stanley of Alderley (1915-1971), he inherited the title of 8th Baron Stanley of Alderley , 8th Baron Sheffield , 7th Baron Eddisbury and 14th Baronet of Alderley on June 23, 1971 .

Stanley was from 1945 to 1952 Captain of the Coldstream Guards and the Coldstreams Guards Independent Parachute Company. He managed, in later years, together with his son, an agricultural estate, which he from New College of Oxford University had leased. He lived as a farmer (tenant farmers) in Oxfordshire (1954-1985) and on the Isle of Anglesey . In 1985 he became Deputy Lieutenant for Gwynedd County .

He held several offices and honorary positions. He was Chairman of the Board ( Chairman ) of the Thames Valley Cereals Ltd (1979-1981) and director ( Governor ) of St Edward's School in Oxford (1979-1998). He was a member of the Friends of St Cybi at Holyhead and the Anglesey Antiquarian Society. He was also a member of the Wellington and Northamptonshire Institute of Agriculture. He was a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies of Great Britain (FRAgS). He was patron ( saint ) of the Ucheldre Center Maritime Museum in Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey. Since 2003 he has been Vice President of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Membership in the House of Lords

With the inheritance of the title of Baron Stanley of Alderley, Thomas Stanley became a member of the House of Lords on June 23, 1971 . In the House of Lords he sat for the Conservative Party . His first parliamentary speech took place on January 16, 1974 as part of a debate on the dairy industry .

In Hansard regular verbal contributions Stanley from the years 1974 are documented to the 1999th On November 11, 1999, he spoke again on the last day of his term of office. In the 1997/98 session he was present on 68 days. His membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Family and private

Stanley married Jane Barrett Hartley on April 30, 1955, the daughter Ernest George Hartley. Her family comes from the village of Lower Farm, near Milton-under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire. The marriage had four children, three sons and a daughter.

In 2003 Stanley gave two places of residence: Trysglwyn Fawr, Amlwch, on the Isle of Anglesey and his property Rectory Farm, near Stanton St. John in Oxfordshire. He died in November 2013 at the age of 85 at his last residence near Stanton St. John in Oxfordshire. The funeral took place on December 10, 2013; the memorial service was at St John the Baptist Church in Stanton St. John in Oxfordshire. His son Richard Oliver Stanley (* 1956) inherited his title of nobility .

His hobbies included sailing , fishing and skiing .
