St. Kilda is a district of Melbourne , Australia , about seven kilometers southeast of the central business district.
location
Located on the beach, St. Kilda is a popular recreational area as well as a center for the arts and alternative culture. St. Kilda is one of Melbourne's most popular party districts. In addition to numerous clubs and bars, there are also many backpacker hostels here . A popular street in St. Kildas is Acland Street. There cakeshops , which also Austrian apple strudel can be purchased. Every Sunday during the day there is an artists' market on the Esplanade.
St. Kilda is the seat of the administration of Port Phillip City .
St. Kilda is the birthplace of Australian writers Joan Lindsay and Morris L. West .
Origin of name
St. Kilda was named after the ship The Lady of St. Kilda , which visited Melbourne in 1841. The owner of the ship was the British politician Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, under whose name the main street of St. Kilda, Acland Street , became known. The ship was originally named after the St. Kilda archipelago in Scotland .
Sports
St. Kilda Beach is used for numerous sailing competitions in the Olympic sailing classes as well as for kitesurfing competitions.
