from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eastern College Athletic Conference ( ECAC ) is an association of currently (2016) 303 member universities of the NCAA . The union stretches from Maine in the north to South Carolina in the south and Missouri in the west. In the ECAC there are 16 different sports (13 men and 14 women). All member universities also belong to at least one other conference . The ECAC is responsible for the competitive sport of more than 110,000 studying amateur athletes.

History of the ECAC

The ECAC was founded in 1938 as the Central Office for Eastern Intercollegiate Athletics on the initiative of James Lynah ( Cornell University ). The first full-time commissioner was Asa S. Bushnell . The ECAC was only responsible for male student-athletes . It was not until 1983 that the merger with the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) (responsible only for female students) was completed. Its headquarters are in Danbury , Connecticut. The ECAC ensures uniform academic standards for the athletes of the member universities and enables the universities that do not belong to a conference in individual sports to have regular competitions. In addition, after the regular season, further cup ( bowl ) competitions are held, which are particularly important due to the high number of member universities. In addition, prizes will be given to the best athletes / coaches etc. from the ECAC. The current commissioner is Kevin McGinniss (since 2013).
