Eberhard Grabitz

Eberhard Grabitz (born September 30, 1934 in Cottbus ; † November 26, 1992 ) was a German law scholar and university professor.

life and work

After graduation in 1954 studied in Berlin Grabitz there at the Free University of Law . However, he passed his first state examination in law at the University of Hamburg . In Hamburg, Grabitz was also promoted to a doctorate in 1966 under the supervision of Hans Peter Ipsen. iur. PhD. He then completed his legal clerkship and passed the second state examination. In 1973 Grabitz completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg with the text Liberty and Constitutional Law and received the Venia legendi for the subjects of public law, European law and political science. From 1975 until his death in 1992 Grabitz held the full chair for public law, European law and political science at the Free University of Berlin.

Grabitz 'research focus was mainly on European law. Here he again focused, among other things, on the law of the European Parliament, the right of Union citizenship and European environmental protection law. He was the first and long-standing editor of the commentary on European law named after him and later continued by Meinhard Hilf and Martin Nettesheim . This work is considered to be one of the most important on this subject. He was also a party representative before the European Court of Justice .
