Eberhard Lenz

Eberhard Lenz (born June 5, 1921 ; † November 26, 2008 ) was a German basketball official and referee.

Life

Lenz came from Berlin , he played soccer , handball and hockey . He was wounded and lost his right arm during World War II . In October 1946 he came to Cologne , where he studied German at the University of Cologne from 1947 to 1952 . During his student days he came into contact with basketball. Despite his wartime injury, he played basketball for 25 years. From 1947 to 1952 Lenz was a student assistant for sports at the University of Cologne, and in 1950 and 1951 he held the office of chairman of the General German University Sports Association. On April 1, 1954, Lenz was one of the founders of the basketball department of ASV Cologne . Until this was dissolved in the summer of 1978, he was its chairman. He was also involved in the ASV women's team, which later played under the umbrella of Saturn, Galatasaray and BC 90.

As a basketball referee, Lenz was a member of the A-squad of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) from 1959 to 1972 . For eleven years he worked for the West German Basketball Association (WBV) as a referee trainer and for ten years as a member of the WBV legal committee (partly as chairman). For the German Basketball Association, he worked on the archive and documentation committee, and was on the DBB honorary council for more than ten years . In the obituary of the German Basketball Federation, Lenz was described as a “real basketball pioneer”.

He worked in book wholesaling, in 1961 he became chief archivist at the German Sport University in Cologne . He held this position until his retirement in November 1984.
