Eberhard Willich (born February 19, 1919 in Stuttgart ) is a German pediatric radiologist and is considered one of the pioneers of European pediatric radiology.

Life

Eberhard Willich was born in Stuttgart as the eldest son of an officer. After completing school at five different humanistic grammar schools, he studied medicine and passed the state examination in Berlin in 1943 . In the same year he did his doctorate in Tübingen on the congenital lung cyst. As a graduate of the Military Medical Academy in Berlin, he became a medical officer (= military doctor)

During World War II he was used as a military doctor and was imprisoned in Russia for 4 years. In 1949 he continued his medical training, initially in pediatrics. He successfully completed this in 1956 at the municipal children's clinic in Bremen and then moved to the company's central X-ray institute, where he completed his training as a specialist in radiology in 1962.

Willich's decisive mentor was Lutz Schall , the then director of the Bremen Children's Clinic, whose special interest, since his own radiological training in the 1920s, has been in pediatric radiology. He commissioned Willich to set up the X-ray department of the Bremen children's clinic. Together they developed an additional device for X-ray examinations of infants and small children, the paidoscope (Koch and Sterzel KG, Röntgenwerk Essen).

In 1965 he was awarded the prize and scholarship from the Bremen Foundation for the Promotion of Science at the University. From 1969 he took over the management of the X-ray department of the University Children's Hospital in Heidelberg , which he led to an international reputation. In 1970 he received his habilitation with the topic: "Cardiac function in childhood - manometric, cinematographic and pharmacoradiological examinations". In 1973 he was appointed to the C3 professorship for Pediatric Radiology at Heidelberg University and retired in 1984.

As a "bridge builder" he established relationships with the former "Eastern Bloc countries" Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, which awarded him honorary membership of the radiological societies. Thanks to his knowledge of Russian, through the mediation of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the DFG (German Research Foundation), he was able to undertake two lecture tours to the Soviet Union (1978: Moscow-Leningrad, 1983: Moscow-Kiev), as well as children's radiologists from the Eastern Bloc countries invite the "Western Congresses".

In his 10 years as the first chairman of the Society for Pediatric Radiology (GPR), he created the conditions for the recognition of this focus. He has dealt scientifically with pediatric radiology in over 300 publications, teaching and manual contributions, monographs and three textbooks, with teaching and advanced training being particularly important to him.

He was co-editor of the journal Der Radiologe , in the editorial board of the Zentralblatt für Kinderheilkunde and on the editorial board of the journal Pediatric Radiology. He is an honorary member of the European Society of Pediatric Radiology , the Society for Pediatric Radiology and the German Radiological Society .
