Ebo Gospels
The Ebo Gospels are a Carolingian illuminated manuscript of significant artistic value and commissioned by Archbishop Ebo of Reims (778–851) . The Gospels are now kept in the municipal library (Bibliothèque Municipale) of the northern French city of Épernay under the signature Ms. 1. It begins with a poem of praise for the client, Archbishop Ebo.
The Gospels was 825 in either Reims or for this purpose in Benedictine - monastery Hautvillers created gathered in Epernay artists, where at the same time also the Utrecht Psalter was produced. This is concluded from the fact that the portraits of the evangelists in the Ebo Gospel are very similar in style and execution to the illuminations of the Utrecht Psalter. Both are among the masterpieces of book art of the Carolingian Renaissance and form the main works of the so-called Reims School .
Before 835 Ebo gave the gospel book to the Hautvillers monastery.
