Gymnocalycium gibbosum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Gymnocalycium gibbosum usually grows individually with dark blue-green, spherical to short cylindrical shoots that reach a diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters. The twelve to 19 ribs are noticeably notched. The one to three central spines are often missing. The seven to 15 straight, stiff, light brown to almost black radial spines have a length of up to 3.5 centimeters.

The white or sometimes reddish flowers are up to 6 inches long. The dark green fruits are club-shaped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium gibbosum is distributed from central to southern Argentina at altitudes of 1000 meters.

It was first described as Cactus gibbosus in 1816 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . Ludwig Mittler placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium in 1844 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocactus gibbosus (Haw.) DC. (1828) and Cereus gibbosus (Haw.) Pfeiff. (1837).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Gymnocalycium gibbosum subsp. gibbosum
  • Gymnocalycium gibbosum subsp. ferox (Labor. ex Rümpler) Papsch

One of the very numerous synonyms is Echinocactus gibbosus var. Fennellii F. Haage ex Quehl .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
