Echinocereus knippelianus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet knippelianus honors theGerman cactus grower Carl Knippel, who livesin Halberstadt .

description

Echinocereus knippelianus grows singly or sprouting and often forms groups with up to 50 shoots , which are seldom extended beyond the soil surface. The almost spherical to spherical, green to rather blackish green, soft-fleshed shoots reach a diameter of 3 to 8 centimeters. There are five to seven low and wide ribs . The up to four straight or twisted, light yellow thorns , which can also be missing, are very variable in size. They have a length of 1.5 to 6 centimeters.

The short funnel-shaped flowers are pink to slightly purple to white and appear near the shoot tips or the sides of the shoots. They are 2.5 to 4 inches long and 4 to 6.5 inches in diameter. The spherical, purple-colored, vertically tearing fruits are covered with one or more thorns and some wool.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Echinocereus knippelianus is found in the Mexican states of Coahuila and Nuevo León in open, grassy areas above 2200 meters. The first description was in 1895 by C. Liebner .

Echinocereus knippelianus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
