Echinocereus mojavensis is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mojavensis refers to the occurrence of the species in the Mojave Desert . An English common name is "Mojave Hedgehog".

description

Echinocereus mojavensis often grows in pads or groups that can consist of up to 500 shoots . The light green spherical to elongated shoots are 5 to 20 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. There are eight to 13 slightly wavy ribs that are occasionally indistinct. The circular areoles on them are white. The initially white thorns turn gray with age. The single central spine has a length of 3 to 5 centimeters. The five to nine radial spines, often curved and twisted, are spread out and 1 to 2.5 inches long.

The carmine-red flowers are up to 7 inches long. The elongated fruits have lengths of 2.5 to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinocereus mojavensis is distributed in the United States in the state of California , in the south of the state of Nevada , in the southwest of the state of Utah and in the northwest of the state of Arizona, and in the northeast of the Mexican state of Baja California .

The first description as Cereus mojavensis by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow was published in 1856. Karl Theodor Rümpler placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1885 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. Mojavensis (Engelm. & JMBigelow) LDBenson (1944), Echinocereus coccineus subsp. mojavensis (Engelm. & JMBigelow) NPTaylor (1997) and Echinocereus triglochidiatus subsp. mojavensis (Engelm. & JMBigelow) W.Blum & Mich.Lange (1998).
