Echinocereus ortegae is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ortegae honors the Mexican botanist Jesus Gonzalez Ortega (1876–1936).

description

Echinocereus ortegae forms dense groups of up to 30 centimeters in diameter, which consist of numerous shoots . The dark green, cylindrical, mostly upright shoots are 10 to 40 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters. There are ten to 16 humped ribs . The needle-like or bristle-like thorns are whitish to brownish. The three to six central spines have lengths of 0.9 to 2.2 centimeters. The ten to 16 radial spines are up to 8 millimeters long.

The tubular to funnel-shaped, slightly zygomorphic flowers are bright scarlet red. They appear on the sides of the shoots, are 6.5 to 10 inches long and reach 4.5 to 10 inches in diameter. The egg-shaped fruits are green and contain white pulp . The thorns on them fall off.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus ortegae is common in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa and Durango .

The first description by Jesús González Ortega was published in 1929.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
