Echinocereus palmeri is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet palmeri honors the botanist and plant collector Edward Palmer (1831-1911)from Great Britain.

description

Echinocereus palmeri grows individually or with a few side shoots and forms a strongly thickened tap root . The dark green, egg-shaped to cylindrical shoots are tapered towards their tips and show constrictions caused by the annual new shoots. They are 3 to 8 centimeters (rarely up to 15 centimeters) long and have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The shoots are not covered by the thorns. There are six to twelve low ribs that are barely humped. The one or two, rarely up to three, slender and ascending central spines are brown to black. They have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters. The eight to 16 whitish radial spines have a darker tip, lie on the shoot surface and are 0.4 to 0.8 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are pink-lavender to pink and fragrant. They appear near the shoot tips, are up to 6 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 6 centimeters (rarely up to 9 centimeters). The egg-shaped fruits are green and contain white pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus palmeri is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Durango .

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1922. A synonym is Echinocereus palmeri subsp. escobedensis W. Rischer (2003).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
