Echinocereus papillosus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet papillosus is derived from the Latin word papillose and refers to the ribs of the species dissolved in humps. English trivial names are "Yellow Alicoche" and "Yellow-Flowered Alicoche".

description

Echinocereus papillosus has many shoots and forms low groups of up to one meter in diameter. The mostly upright brownish green, cylindrical shoots have a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. There are six to ten ribs that are clearly tubercular. The individual greyish central spine has a length of up to 1.5 centimeters. The seven to eleven spreading, stiff and whitish radial spines are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The fragrant funnel-shaped flowers are bright yellow and have an orange-red to purple-colored throat. They appear along the shoot sides, are 6 to 9 inches long and reach 8 to 12 inches in diameter. The fruits are spherical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus papillosus is found in the United States in the southern state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Nuevo León , Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí .

The first description by Karl Theodor Rümpler was published in 1885.

Nomenclatory synonyms are Cereus papillosus (Linke ex Rümpler) A. Berger (1905), Echinocereus blanckii var. Papillosus (Linke ex Rümpler) LDBenson (1969) and Echinocereus berlandieri var. Papillosus (Linke ex Rümpler) LDBenson (1976).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
