description

Echinocereus pensilis usually grows in a disorderly manner. The noticeably yellowish green, cylindrical shoots tapering towards their tips are initially upright, but soon become overhanging or drooping. They are often occupied with aerial roots . The shoots are 1 to 4 meters long and 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. There are eight to ten rounded and humped ribs . The single pale yellow central spine has a length of up to 2.5 centimeters. The initially six to ten and later up to 70 or more radial spines are light yellow and more or less radiating.

The tubular to narrowly funnel-shaped flowers are orange-red. They appear near the shoot tips or on older shoot parts, are up to 6.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4.5 centimeters. The red, elongated and thorny fruits contain red pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus pensilis is common in the Cape region of the Mexican state Baja California Sur .

The first description as Cereus pensilis by Mary Katharine Brandegee was published in 1905. Joseph Anton Purpus placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1908 . A nomenclatory synonym is Morangaya pensilis (K.Brandegee) GDRowley (1974), since Gordon Douglas Rowley created the new monotypical genus Morangaya for the species in 1974 , which, however, did not receive general recognition.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
