Echinocereus stolonifer is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet stolonifer is derived from the Latin word stoloniferus , which means 'producing runners' and refers to the growth habit of the species.
description
Echinocereus stolonifer usually grows with many below ground branching stems , forming colonies. The deep green egg-shaped to cylindrical shoots are 9 to 30 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. They are partially covered by the thorns. There are eleven to 16 low ribs that are only slightly humped. The one to five strong central spines are brownish to gray. The lowest of them is directed downwards. The central spines have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters. The eight to 13 gray or whitish radial spines lie on the shoot surface and are up to 1.5 centimeters long.
The short funnel-shaped flowers are bright yellow. They appear near the shoot tips, are up to 7.5 centimeters long and reach 7 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The reddish fruits are very thorny.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinocereus stolonifer is common in open forests in the Mexican states of Sonora , Chihuahua, and Sinaloa .
The first description by William Taylor Marshall was published in 1938. The following subspecies are distinguished:

- Echinocereus stolonifer subsp. tayopensis (WTMarshall) G. Pichler ex NPTaylor
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
