Echinopsis bertramiana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bertramiana honors the German clergyman and cactus lover Paul Bertram from Erfurt.

description

Echinopsis bertramiana grows tree-shaped, is branched near the base and often forms a short trunk. The upright, cylindrical shoots reach heights of up to 2 meters with a diameter of 25 centimeters. There are about 20 sharp ribs that are up to 3 centimeters high. The areoles on it are light brown. Occasionally, bristle-like, but usually needle-like, downwardly directed, whitish thorns arise from them , which become yellowish with age. The thorns are 0.5 to 8 centimeters long.

The flowers are yellow to creamy white.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis bertramiana is widespread in the Bolivian department of La Paz .

The first description as Trichocereus bertramianus by Curt Backeberg was published in 1935. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis . Echinopsis bertramiana can hardly be distinguished from Echinopsis tarijensis and is probably only a synonym for this species.

Nomenclatory synonyms are Helianthoceretts bertramianus (Backeb.) Backeb. (1949), Lobivia formosa var. Bertramiana (Backeb.) Rausch (1987) and Echinopsis tarijensis subsp. bertramiana (Backeb.) Lowry (2002). Included in the species as a synonym are Trichocereus orurensis Cárdenas (1953), Helianthocereus orurensis (Cárdenas) Backeb. (1955), Echinopsis orurensis (Cárdenas) H.Friedrich & GDRowley (1974), Trichocereus tarijensis var. Orurensis (Cárdenas) F.Ritter (1980), Lobivia formosa var. Orurensis (Cárdenas) GDRowley (1982), Trichocereus orurensis var. aibiflorus Cardenas (1953), Helianthocereus orurensis var. aibiflorus (Cardenas) Backeb. (1955) and Echinopsis orurensis var. Albiflora (Cárdenas) H. Friedrich & GDRowley (1974).
