description

Echinopsis cerdana grows individually. The (depressed) spherical, gray-green shoots reach heights of 8 to 10 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. There are eleven to 16 sharp-edged ribs that are notched. The white areoles on it are 2.5 to 3 centimeters apart. The strong, awl thorns that arise from them are gray and have a darker tip. The single central spine is 3 to 6 inches long. The eight to twelve radial spines have a length of 1 to 3 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped to tubular, white flowers appear on the side of the shoots and open at night. They become up to 14 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis cerdana is widespread in the Bolivian Department of Potosí at altitudes of about 3600 meters.

The first description by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1959. A nomenclatory synonym is Lobivia ferox f. cerdana (Cárdenas) J.Ullmann .

In 1980, Friedrich Ritter put the species into the synonymy of Echinopsis ferox in his book Cacti in South America . Martin Lowry treated Echinopsis cerdana 2002 as a synonym of Echinopsis ferox subsp. potosina .
