Echinopsis chrysochete is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet chrysochete is derived from the Greek words chrysos for 'gold' and chaite for 'long hair' and refers to the yellow bristly thorns of the species.

Echinopsis chrysochete grows individually or in groups. The flattened spherical to spherical, green shoots have a diameter of up to 25 centimeters. There are about 20 slightly crooked ribs that are humped. The yellow to brownish thorns arising from the areoles are thin and bristle-like. The three to five central spines are up to 8 inches long. The number of radial spines is up to approximately 30.

The broad and short funnel-shaped flowers are shiny orange to red and have a whitish throat. The flowers reach a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis chrysochete is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca , Tarija and possibly Potosí as well as the Argentine provinces of Jujuy and Salta at altitudes of 2500 to 4000 meters.

The first description by Erich Werdermann was published in 1936.

A nomenclature synonym is Lobivia chrysochete (Werderm.) Werderm. ex Wessner (1938). In addition, the following taxa were included as synonymous in the species: Lobivia hystrix F.Ritter (1966), Lobivia chrysochete var.hystrix (F.Ritter) Ullmann (1992), Lobivia tenuispina F.Ritter (1966), Lobivia chrysochete var. Tenuispina (F.Ritter) Rausch (1976), Lobivia markusii Rausch (1970), Lobivia chrysochete var. Markusii (Rausch) Rausch (1976, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Lobivia chrysochete var. Minutiflora Rausch (1977) and Lobivia chrysochete var. subtilis Rausch (1980).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
