Richard William Smith (born April 28, 1959 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian clergyman of the Catholic Church and Archbishop of Edmonton .

Life

Richard William Smith was ordained a priest on May 23, 1987 . He studied at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax and completed a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was Vicar General in the Archdiocese of Halifax .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Pembroke on April 27, 2002 . The Archbishop of Ottawa , Marcel André J. Gervais , donated him episcopal ordination on June 18 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Terrence Thomas Prendergast SJ , Archbishop of Halifax, and Austin-Emile Burke , Senior Archbishop of Halifax. As a motto he chose "Fiat Voluntas Tua".

He was named Archbishop of Edmonton on March 22, 2007, and inducted into office on May 1 of that year.

Richard William Smith served as Chairman of the Canadian Bishops' Conference (CECC) until September 25, 2013.

Smith is a member of the Knights of Columbus .
