Echinopsis clavata is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet clavata comes from Latin , means 'club-shaped' and refers to the shape of the shoots.

description

Echinopsis clavata has a shrubby growth , branching from the base and is more or less prostrate and creeping. The club-shaped, dark green shoots are 1 to 2 meters long and 7 to 15 centimeters in diameter. There are seven to ten blunt ribs that are notched. The round areoles on them are densely covered with orange-brown wool and are 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters apart. Dark brown, needle-like, mostly straight thorns arise from them . The mostly single, very strong central spine is 2 to 9 centimeters long. The four to eight slightly spread radial spines have a length of 0.5 to 3 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers reach a length of up to 18 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis clavata is widespread in the Bolivian department of La Paz at altitudes of 2500 to 3000 meters.

The first description as Trichocereus clavatus by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1980. David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1997 in the genus Echinopsis .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
