Echinopsis kladiwaiana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet kladiwaiana honors the Austrian doctor and cactus specialist Leo Kladiwa (1920–1987).

description

Echinopsis kladiwaiana often forms groups. The cylindrical, fresh green shoots reach heights of up to 20 centimeters with a diameter of 6 centimeters. There are eleven to thirteen straight ribs that are notched. The areoles on them are white. From them spring bendable, brown thorns that are lighter at their base. The one to three protruding central spines are up to 10 centimeters long. The twelve to 14 radiating radial spines have a length of up to 1.5 centimeters.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night and appear near the apex of the shoot. They are up to 22 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 12 centimeters. The spherical to onion-shaped fruits are brownish pink and reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis kladiwaiana is distributed in the Bolivian department of La Paz near Inquisivi at altitudes of 3000 meters.

The first description by Walter Rausch was published in 1972.

Gonzalo Navarro treated Echinopsis kladiwaiana in 1996 as a synonym of Echinopsis bridgesii .
