Echinopsis mataranensis is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mataranensis refers to the occurrence of the species near the Bolivian town of Matarani .

description

Echinopsis mataranensis grows individually. The spherical, glauken shoots reach heights of 12 to 13 centimeters with diameters of 18 to 20 centimeters. There are eleven to 25 sharp-edged ribs that are notched and humped. The crooked areoles on them are light brown and are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. The eleven to thirteen spines arising from them  cannot be divided into central and radial spines. They are somewhat comb-like, spread out or lie on the surface of the shoot. The 1 to 5 centimeters long, curved thorns are gray and swollen at their base.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers appear on the side of the shoots and open at night. They are 16 to 18 inches long and up to 8 inches in diameter. Their pericarpels and the flower tube are covered with tufts of black hair .

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis mataranensis is distributed in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba in the municipality of Tarata at altitudes around 3000 meters.

The first description by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1970.

Gonzalo Navarro treated Echinopsis kladiwaiana in 1996 as a synonym of Echinopsis obrepanda .
